Neurodivergent Intersectionality, Epistemic Injustice, & Minority Stress in Mental Health Services

Description

What does truly inclusive, trauma-informed mental health care look like for Neurodivergent individuals with intersecting marginalized identities?

Course Description:

Traditional mental health services for neurodivergent individuals often fail to account for the complex, overlapping identities —particularly those who are also part of marginalized racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual minority groups. This course explores Neurodivergent Intersectionality through the Neurodiversity Paradigm, highlighting the impact of epistemic injustice, minority stress, and systemic barriers in mental health services.

Designed for mental healthcare professionals including psychologists, counselors, social workers, and other therapists, this course integrates trauma-informed therapy practices that affirm Neurodivergent identity and address the compounding effects of racism, ableism, and heteronormativity in clinical settings. Participants will learn how to recognize institutional biases, validate lived experiences, and implement culturally responsive, neurodivergence-informed therapy approaches.

Through interactive discussions, case studies, and evidence-based strategies, participants will:

  1. Examine the intersection of neurodivergence, racial/ethnic identity, gender identity, and sexual minority status.
  2. Understand how epistemic injustice and minority stress contribute to poor mental health outcomes.
  3. Develop neurodiversity-affirming, trauma-informed clinical approaches.
  4. Identify barriers to equitable mental health care and advocate for systemic change.
